Why Friday mattered

Sean Murphy's sixth-inning single was all Atlanta managed as Pérez went the distance and Miami took the series opener, 3–0.

Eury Pérez needed 105 pitches to finish all nine innings Friday night, and the Braves got one hit off him. Sean Murphy's leadoff single in the sixth was Atlanta's only hit, and it lasted exactly one batter. Pérez struck out eight, walked one and closed out a 3–0 Miami win in the opener at loanDepot park.

Murphy's hit was a sharp liner to left field. Drake Baldwin followed by grounding into a 4-6-3 double play, and Pérez never let another Brave reach. He retired the last 11 hitters he faced. Only three Atlanta batters reached base all night: Ronald Acuña Jr. on a Javier Sanoja error in the first, Matt Olson on a walk in the fourth, and Murphy. Pérez faced 29 batters, two over the minimum.

The ninth took three hitters. Murphy lined out to shortstop Otto Lopez. Baldwin grounded to first, with Pérez covering the bag. Acuña lined out to center fielder Jakob Marsee, and that was the game.

For six innings, Atlanta's pitchers matched him. Ray Kerr, making his first start of the season, threw three scoreless innings on 32 pitches and allowed two hits and a walk. The defense kept bailing out the staff. The Braves turned a double play in the second and another in the sixth, and Acuña threw Sanoja out at first from right field on a single in the eighth. It was 0–0 through six.

Joe Mack broke it open in the seventh. With one out, he hit a solo homer to right-center off Grant Holmes, his 14th of the year. Holmes finished with four innings, three hits, one run and three walks, and took the loss.

Miami put it away in the eighth against Didier Fuentes. Marsee led off with a triple to center, and Heriberto Hernández singled him home. With two outs, Griffin Conine hit a solo homer to left-center, his 18th. Fuentes gave up five hits and two runs in his one inning.

The Marlins outhit Atlanta 10 to 1. Conine went 2-for-3, and Marsee and Sanoja had two hits apiece. The whole game took two hours and one minute.

The series continues Saturday at loanDepot park, with first pitch at 3:10 p.m. CT. Neither team has announced a starter.
