Why Wednesday mattered

Mauricio Dubón punched a grounder back to the mound in the tenth, and DaShawn Keirsey Jr. beat it home. Atlanta walked off Cincinnati 3–2 — answering Tuesday’s shutout with the loudest kind of reply Truist still has in September.

One night after the Reds blanked the Braves 4–0, the East champions needed extras to even the set. Three solo homers kept the night a one-run scrap. A sacrifice fly briefly put Cincinnati back on top. Then Dubón ended it with runners everywhere and the park on its feet.

Juan Brito struck first in the opening frame — his third homer of the year, a fly to center that made it 1–0 before Atlanta had swung in anger. Chris Sale answered the only way that still matters in September: swing-and-miss. He worked 5.2 innings, allowed four hits and one earned run, struck out ten, and walked nobody. Andrew Abbott matched him deep on the other side — seven innings, six hits, two earned, six strikeouts, one walk. Neither would factor in the decision.

Matt Olson finally knotted it in the sixth with his forty-first, a center-field blast that erased Brito’s early lead. Cincinnati went back ahead in the seventh on Will Banfield’s sacrifice fly to left — Dubón the fielder — scoring Matt McLain for a 2–1 edge. Austin Riley answered before the inning cooled: his eighteenth, also to center, and Truist was tied again at 2–2.

Extras. Brent Suter retired the side in order in the top of the tenth and earned the win. In the bottom, the automatic runner Keirsey opened on second. Ha-Seong Kim pushed him to third with a sacrifice bunt. Drake Baldwin took a hit-by-pitch. Dubón’s RBI single off Luis Mey — a ground ball back to the pitcher — scored Keirsey for the walk-off. Baldwin moved to second as the celebration started.

Atlanta moves to 93–65. Cincinnati falls to 73–85. The series is even, 1–1, with one night left at Truist.
