Why Thursday mattered

Héctor Rodríguez’s two-run homer in the sixth held up, and the Reds took the Truist series while the Braves outhit them 12–7.

Atlanta put twelve hits on the board Thursday night and still walked off the field behind. Héctor Rodríguez’s 423-foot, two-run homer in the sixth gave Cincinnati a 7–6 lead, the Braves never found the tying run, and the Reds left Truist with two of three.

The first inning went like a slugfest. Carlos Jorge homered in the top half, and Atlanta answered with four runs without leaving the yard: a Matt Olson sacrifice fly, a Michael Harris II RBI double, an Ozzie Albies infield single that brought in a run, and an Austin Riley sacrifice fly.

The lead didn’t last. Matt McLain singled in a run in the second. In the third, Elly De La Cruz hit a 402-foot homer, and Eugenio Suárez followed later in the inning with a two-run single that put the Reds up 5–4. Riley tied it in the bottom half with a 421-foot solo shot.

Neither starter got deep. Brady Singer lasted three innings and allowed five earned runs. Tyler Mahle went five and allowed five.

Mike Yastrzemski’s RBI single in the fifth put Atlanta back in front, 6–5. It held for half an inning. Rodríguez went deep in the sixth, and that was the last run anyone scored. The Atlanta bullpen kept Cincinnati quiet the rest of the way; the Braves’ bats just couldn’t answer.

The last chance came in the ninth against Emilio Pagán. Harris singled, and Mauricio Dubón bunted him to second, putting the tying run in scoring position with one out. Pagán struck out Albies, then got Yastrzemski to fly out to Jorge to end it.

That’s the night in one line. Atlanta outhit Cincinnati by five, made no errors, and scored six. After the fifth, the Braves didn’t cross the plate again, and the final threat ended with the tying run standing on second.

Connor Phillips got the win. AJ Smith-Shawver took the loss. Pagán earned the save.

Atlanta falls to 93–66. Cincinnati moves to 74–85. Cincinnati won the series, two games to one. Friday the Braves are at Miami, first pitch 7:10 p.m. ET, 6:10 p.m. CT. Atlanta’s starter is to be determined. Eury Pérez starts for the Marlins.
